Home movie: March 2011

I forgot to post this movie back in March. Actually, I forgot to post about anything in March. And April. Whatever excuses I've made in the past for prolonged absences also apply here (e.g. work, family, travel, rehab, seminary, etc). I've got all kinds of fun Evelyn updates, but I'll get to that tomorrow. Or the next day. Or June. In the meantime, enjoy the movie.

New movie: Winter 2010/11

I know the blog's been a little heavy on videos lately and a little light on writing. I promise to change that, just as soon as I think of something insightful or amusing to say. If you're looking for more frequent content, feel free to follow me on Twitter, where insight and humor are neither required nor, apparently, welcome.

Here's the latest home movie. The song is "Adore" by Alva Star.

Just Dance

I'm filled with shame. Mostly because I spent an hour or more putting this thing together. I can't help but think that there might have been a more productive way to spend my time.

Ms. Potato Head

She was playing with Mr. Potato Head, picked up an ear, and put it in its rightful place. On her.

Toddler talk

I am loving Evelyn's ultra-efficient toddler talk. At this age, she doesn't have any other option. She has a lot to communicate but a relatively limited vocabulary with which to express it. A few sample translations:

  • "Daddy, 'Mo!" translates to ---> "Father, I would very much enjoy watching a Sesame Street episode that features my favorite character Elmo."
  • "Daddy, M & M!" ---> "Oh dear, it seems I've soiled my diaper. Instead of letting you figure this out on your own, I'm taking the initiative and pro-actively informing you of this fact. As you may be aware, Mother often rewards me with an M&M in this situation. Might you consider doing the same?"
  • "Mommy, Nana, Daddy!" ---> "Whoops, sorry about that. You're not Mommy or Nana. You're Daddy. Sorry, still getting a hang of this talking thing."

Let's see, what else... Here's what Evelyn's looking like these days. The hat's become part of her permanent wardrobe. Haven't seen her hair in weeks.

Peek...a...boo

Evelyn takes her sweet time playing peekaboo. Believe it or not, I hit the record button a long time after she started this game.

Girl in the mirror

Evelyn is entertained by, and apparently confused by, mirrors. A few months ago, we caught her playing peekaboo with herself in front of our standing mirror. She would stand a few inches to the right of the mirror, then quickly step to the left, see her reflection, and yell "BOO!" She even managed to startle herself. She eventually got sick of that game and, frankly, kind of sick of the girl in the mirror too. Because when she sees that girl now, she usually just points at her, or slaps her, or in this case, lectures her. I wish I had a better video of this, because she does it all the time and it can go on for minutes. But you at least get the idea.

New year, old stories

Long time no ramble. How you been? Sorry if I've seemed a little distant lately. The Blake Family's been busy with holidays and work and child-rearing, but I didn't want you to think we'd abandoned you.

Let's see, where were we? I think the last time we spoke, I was bragging about my Teacher of the Year wife and telling you about my heroic battle with food poisoning. Well, since our little jaunt to the Fergus Falls hospital, the Blake Family has had to make a couple more trips to the ER. (One more visit and we qualify for the Customer Loyalty Discount.) One trip to the ER was to get stitches for Evelyn. I'll tell you more about that incident (the Great Grocery Cart Debacle of 2010) in the coming days.

I'll also be posting new photos of Evelyn sometime soon, and there are plenty to choose from. I got Megan a fancy new camera for Christmas, so all of a sudden she's taken an interest in documenting our child's life. This is the third time I've gotten Megan a camera for Christmas. We've been together for a while, but that still seems like a lot of cameras. And it's not because I'm a lazy, unimaginative gift giver (although I am). Each time, Megan has demanded the camera, either a specific model or a long list of features it needs to have (and she'll never learn to use). Either cameras obsolesce quickly or my wife's a vapid, materialistic brat. Probably both.
